Who is Doug Ford? The Ontario Premier in the middle of US tariff war with Canada

Ontario Premier Doug Ford has recently taken significant actions in response to escalating trade tensions with the United States under President Donald Trump. Initially, Ford imposed a 25% surcharge on electricity exports to U.S. states such as Michigan, Minnesota, and New York, affecting approximately 1.5 million households and businesses. This move was a direct reaction to President Trump's proposed tariffs on Canadian imports.

In retaliation, President Trump threatened to declare a national emergency on electricity and to double tariffs on Canadian steel and aluminum to 50%. These escalating measures contributed to economic uncertainty, leading to notable declines in financial markets, including Wall Street.

Following "productive" emergency discussions with U.S. Secretary of Commerce Howard Lutnick, Premier Ford decided to suspend the 25% electricity surcharge and announced plans to travel to Washington for further negotiations. Ford emphasized the importance of dialogue, stating that negotiation is beneficial for both sides.

Doug Ford, brother of the late Toronto Mayor Rob Ford, has been compared to President Trump due to his populist rhetoric and policies. He leveraged his brother's notoriety to gain political success, despite facing his own controversies. With Canadian elections approaching, Ford's relationship with President Trump and his political influence may play a significant role in the country's future.

Ford has served as the 26th Premier of Ontario since June 29, 2018, representing the Progressive Conservative Party. He was re-elected with increased majorities in 2022 and in a snap election on February 27, 2025.
