A man says his stepmom locked him in a room for decades. He escaped by setting a fire

In Waterbury, Connecticut, a 32-year-old man escaped from over two decades of alleged captivity by setting fire to his residence on February 17, 2025. The man, who had been confined since he was approximately 11 years old, weighed only 68 pounds at the time of his rescue.

The victim's stepmother, Kimberly Sullivan, 56, has been arrested and charged with multiple offenses, including kidnapping, assault, and cruelty to persons. She is currently held on a $300,000 bond.

Investigations revealed that the victim endured severe neglect, malnutrition, and inhumane treatment. He was reportedly confined to an 8-by-9-foot room for at least 22 hours daily, receiving minimal sustenance and resorting to drinking from the toilet.

The victim's uncle, Kurt Sullivan, described his nephew's appearance as resembling that of a Holocaust survivor. He expressed shock and sorrow upon seeing him for the first time in two decades.

Despite reports of concerns raised by school authorities during the victim's childhood, no effective intervention occurred. Former principal Tom Pannone recalled the school's efforts to address the child's frail condition and lack of food, which were reported to authorities without resulting action.

Kimberly Sullivan denies all allegations, with her attorney describing them as unfounded. The investigation is ongoing as authorities seek justice for the victim's prolonged suffering.
